TOP 50 FILM SONGS OF ALL TIME

Movies and music have been a natural combination ever since sound was first added to moving images. Whether a film is a tear-jerking drama, an action-packed thriller or a side-splitting comedy, the right song at the right moment will always elevate the impact of a scene. Not only that, many songs written for films have stood on their own, with the popularity of some eclipsing the movies that inspired them. Here's a look back at the top 25 film songs of all time.

Travel in time through cinema history by visiting the oldest purpose built, continuously serving cinema in the UK, the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley.

Step 1: What's the Big Secret? The Phoenix cinema opened in 1910 as the East Finchley Picturedome, and has been screening films ever since – for almost a century. The Phoenix is staffed by passionate, knowledgeable individuals. Chief Projectionist Peter Bayley has been projecting films for nearly 50 years, and was awarded the MBE for services to the UK film industry in 2002.

“This cinema to me is a wonderful gem, it’s the oldest purpose (built) cinema in the UK still running as a cinema, and it has character. Multiplexes unfortunately are on automatic systems where everything’s done for them, as long as they set the film up. Here it’s a lot more hands on, where you can give a much more personal touch to a film showing.”

Step 2: What's on offer? Today, a visitor to The Phoenix will be treated to a traditionally British cinema experience. Make sure you arrive early to make the most of the coffee bar's range of coffee, speciality teas and home-made cakes, as well as sweets, crisps and the traditional popcorn. The phoenix is also one of the few cinemas in the country where you can enjoy a drink while watching the film. The licensed bar serves a range of beers and wines, with wine of the month tailored to match the flavour of the evening's main feature. The Phoenix is entirely independent, and over almost a century has gained a strong reputation for its varied programme. The Phoenix is also dedicated to encouraging an interest in cinema in the local community, and runs a range of special events, such as film-making workshops, film classes and talks by well-known filmmakers. Visit the website, www.phoenixcinema.co.uk for details of upcoming events. The Phoenix shows a wide range of films, with the programme changing on a weekly basis. Evening screenings start at about 6.30pm with matinee screenings on Sundays and Tuesdays starting from 11am. Download the programme and sign up for the mailing list at www.phoenixcinema.co.uk.

Step 3: Where is it? The Phoenix Cinema is on Great North Road in East Finchley, London. East Finchley is the nearest tube station. Adult tickets are £4.50 on a Monday night, £6.50 Tuesday through Thursday, and £7.50 Saturdays and Sundays. Full price lists are available from the website, or call the box office on 0208 444 6789
