THE COUNTRY IN OTHER COUNTRIES

THE ARCHERS

The Archers is a long-running British radio soap opera broadcast on BBC's channel 4. It was originally built as an everyday story of country folk, as you can hear on this website. With more than 17,850 episodes, it has become the world's longest running radio soap opera production. That might be the reason why our book has chosen it as an introduction to the issue in this unit: the countryside.

According to the advantages and disadvantages on the presentation above, what do you prefer: the peaceful tranquility of living in the country or the crowded ambulance siren-in-the-distance city life? What are the pros or cons of living in one place or the other? A discussion on whether life is better in the city or in the country will definitely stir up some healthy debate in class.

Let's get started with the newspaper article here so that you can make up your mind on where the better place to live is..... Then, have a look at the presentation above again and....You decide!!

Once you have decided, how about trying the vocabulary exercises here? Scroll down the website and find the exercises on city and country life. When you finish, you can also try the listening activity on elllo, which is a very useful site for English students.

And last, but not least, find out a bit more about city life just by doing this listening activity about the best and worst things to living in London. Can you imagine what life is like living in such a cosmopolitan city? When you finish the listening task, check your answers and send me your final score. Remember that my teacher's code is "paulagomez". Good luck!!
